Robert ap Gwilym Ddu ~ 1766-1850

One of the greatest Welsh poets

His mother came from Brynhafod, Capel Uchaf, Clynnog and Robert ap Gwilym Ddu (Robert Williams) was owner of a piece of land at Ty'n-y-mynydd (the lower side of the road by Bryngolau, Capel Uchaf. This plot is clearly shown on the Tithe map of 1841. (See Y Ffynnon, February 1989)

His most famous hymn was “Mae'r gwaed a redodd ar y groes”:

Mae'r gwaed a redodd ar y groes
O oes i oes i’w gofio,
Rhy fyr yw tragwyddoldeb llawn
I ddweud yn iawn amdano...

One of the most famous and moving elegies to be composed in the Welsh Language was written by him on the death of his fifteen-year-old daughter. Part of the elegy follows below:

... Angau arfog, miniog, mawr,
Ar ei gadfarch ergydfawr,
Wele yma carlamodd,
A’i rym a’i egni a rodd;
Torrodd i lawr, drwy fawr feth,
Ein diddig, unig eneth...

Ymholais, crwydrais mewn cri; - och alar!
Hir chwiliais amdani;
Chwilio’r celloedd oedd eiddi,
A chwilio heb ei chael hi.
